After becoming aware of the current digital marketing skills shortage and struggling to recruit for a position, Billingshurst-based marketing agency PMW has welcomed its first apprentice.

Lois Edginton from Southwater joined PMW in April and is being mentored by the agency’s Senior Digital Manager Tom Marchant. At the end of her 15-month apprenticeship, Lois will receive a Digital Marketer Level 3 qualification, which encompasses a BCS Certificate in Marketing Principles, BCS Certificate in Principles of Coding, and Google Analytics Individual Qualification.

Tom is focusing Lois’s training on learning the fundamentals of Google Ads, an online advertising platform, and has created a structured programme so she can learn the essentials of setting up a campaign, executing tasks and analysing data. Lois will have the opportunity to take the skills she is learning and create campaigns for PMW’s clients.

Lois commented:

“I had been looking to do an apprenticeship for a while and the PMW opportunity sounded really interesting and relevant to where marketing and future jobs are heading.

“Through the apprenticeship, I attend college and virtual lessons every Friday and being able to implement theory into real-life situations with PMW clients is extremely beneficial to my learning. I’m really enjoying the variety of work – no day is ever the same – and it helps that Tom and the whole PMW team are so welcoming, knowledgeable and open to answering my questions.”

Tom added:

“There is a much publicised digital marketing skills gap, and it’s something we recognised when trying to recruit for a position recently. We subsequently took the decision to take on an apprentice who we could train correctly and set them up for a future career in the industry.

“In addition to Lois becoming fully competent in all aspects of Google Ads campaigns, I will also be supporting her to complete the Google Skills Shop qualification, and will be expanding her expertise set to include an understanding of email automation marketing.

“Lois has really fitted in with the team. She’s picked up skills extremely quickly and is really enthusiastic – it’s great having her here. By the time her apprenticeship ends, it’s my aim that Lois will be one of PMW’s Google specialists and one of the most experienced and knowledgeable digital marketers in Sussex!”

The apprenticeship is being co-ordinated by Creative Process Digital.
