A Legal & General survey, involving over 2,000 UK adults aged 55 and over, has shed light on the travel dreams and preferences of retirees in the South East of England. The findings offer insight into what those in retirement hope to achieve from their travels, with relaxation topping the list for 55% of respondents.

In addition to relaxation, 52% of South East retirees are looking forward to spending time with loved ones during their travels, while 43% aim to create meaningful memories. A notable 38% of respondents expressed a desire to splurge a little on their retirement trips, indicating a willingness to indulge after years of hard work.

Confidence in Solo Travel

Despite the desire for relaxation and memorable experiences, only 62% of South East retirees said they felt confident travelling solo in retirement, leaving a significant portion uncertain about the prospect of independent travel.

Financial Planning for Retirement Travel

When it comes to financial planning, 66% of respondents from the South East reported that they had set, or planned to set, money aside specifically for retirement travel. However, 20% admitted they had not made any financial preparations for their trips, highlighting a divide in retirement planning approaches.

Confidence in Financial Considerations

The survey also revealed that 57% of retirees believe they had carefully considered, or were in the process of considering, their finances when planning travel during retirement. On the other hand, 18% acknowledged that they had not taken financial considerations into account for their trips.

Dream Retirement Trips

Popular travel plans among South East retirees include long weekend city breaks in Europe, with 27% of respondents expressing interest. A UK-based long weekend trip came in as the second most popular choice (24%), followed closely by staycations (21%).

Travel Styles of South East Retirees

The survey also explored the different travel styles adopted by South East retirees. The majority (29%) described themselves as ‘easy-going’, preferring a flexible approach without detailed planning. Meanwhile, 22% identified as ‘planners’, preferring to book events, flights, and accommodation well in advance.
