Surrey Pupils Feature In Anti-Bullying Week News Programme For Primary Schools
Pupils at a Surrey primary school will feature in a children’s news programme for Anti-Bullying Week and World Kindness Day, which will debut to thousands of schools across the UK on 14th November.
Children from West Ashtead Primary School in Ashtead were invited to take part in a special episode of Espresso News Bites – the award-winning news service for primary schools. Produced in partnership with ITN Productions, Espresso News Bites brings the world’s biggest stories to UK classrooms every day via the digital learning platform Espresso by Discovery Education.
A film crew from Espresso News Bites and ITN visited West Ashtead Primary School to film Year 6 pupils learning about Anti-Bullying Week and World Kindness Day. Using digital resources from Espresso, the children learned about different types of bullying and explored how to prevent bullying and support one another through role-play and classroom activities.
Year 6 pupil Abigail said:
“We used role play to explore bullying and what to do if we were experiencing the different forms of bullying.”
Year 6 pupil Lottie said:
“I would tell someone that they need to speak to an adult. You shouldn’t keep it to yourself – adults might be able to help you.”
School Principal Sarah Wells said:
“We were delighted to welcome the film crew from Espresso News Bites to mark Anti-Bullying Week. The children used a variety of different resources to explore bullying and what this means. They are now able to share ways to seek help and how they would support others, ranging from speaking to adults, using resources available through charities such as Childline, to gaining support from their peers.”
Anti-Bullying Week is an annual event that aims to raise awareness of bullying, with an emphasis on prevention. Coordinated by the charity Anti-Bullying Alliance, Anti-Bullying Week 2024 will take place from Monday 11th to Friday 15th November, and this year’s theme is Choose Respect.
World Kindness Day is an international observance that takes place on 13th November each year.
