Mid Sussex MP visits Burgess Hill builders merchant to celebrate 175th anniversary year

The Burgess Hill depot of Covers Timber & Builders Merchants welcomed Mims Davies, the Conservative MP for Mid Sussex, to its depot on Thursday 18th August.

Ms Davies was given a tour of the depot by manager Terry Lace who explained its operations and products as well as how the business gets involved with community projects and charitable giving. She also met Covers’ Chairman, Rupert Green and Regional Director Sean Clarke. The Green family has been running the independent business since the 1940s.

William Cover founded the company in 1846 when it began trading in Chichester, and members of the Cover family remained connected to the business until 1989. The company started by selling home grown timber, which was brought to site by horse-drawn wagon. Since then, Covers has expanded to 14 depots operating across the south of England and extended its product offering to include a full range of construction materials. Its values of having a dedicated team and being customer-focused, highly knowledgeable, and independent remain to this day.

Mims Davies MP commented:

“I was absolutely delighted to be invited to visit Covers as they celebrate their 175th anniversary year. As a local independent family run company, it was great to tour the site, hear the history of the company and understand how well they have emerged from the pandemic. Their amazing and generous support of local charities and the sponsorship of local sports clubs is to be commended. I am sure this is much appreciated by the local community, and I very much wish them continued success in the future.”

Terry Lace, Depot Manager of Covers Burgess Hill, added:

“We’ve worked hard to become one of the leading businesses in the area. We’ve built a loyal customer base and encourage the local community to use us for projects they are completing in their own homes. It was a pleasure to welcome Ms Davies as part of our 175th anniversary celebrations and show her around.”
