Agency founders inspire young entrepreneurs with inspiring talk to University of Southampton students

TWO founders are inspiring a young generation of entrepreneurs with a recent workshop.

Josh Mitchell and Chris Stones founded Southampton-based marketing agency Mitchell and Stones in 2018 and have since grown the company to a team of 15 and quadrupled its turnover.

The duo took to Barclays Network Eagle Labs in Southampton to present a sales and marketing workshop to a group of students from the University of Southampton who are taking part in the university’s Foundership Scheme.

The students, who are all at various stages of founding and growing their own businesses, alongside studying towards their degrees, were selected to join the scheme to receive support in founding their companies, including sessions such as the one delivered by Josh and Chris.

The two shared their experience of leaving university and becoming founders themselves at just 23 and 26, sharing their wisdom and practical advice, as well as the mistakes they made along the way.

Josh said: ‘We believe that hearing about first-hand experience is very valuable when starting up your own business. One of the best ways to succeed in business is to learn from other people. Not only from their successes but also from their mistakes, we hope that by sharing the ones that we made these students can avoid doing so and go on to have thriving businesses. I’m really pleased to have been asked to come along to deliver this session and truly hope it makes a difference to the students.’

Lloyd Attrill, the university’s student enterprise specialist practitioner said: ‘I have personally known Josh and Chris for many years and watched their business go from strength to strength. When I was constructing the schedule and deciding upon the content and topics we wanted across the 12-week scheme I was determined to find a business who could deliver a session on practical sales and marketing tips. A big factor in selecting Mitchell and Stones was their relatability and experience as student founders alongside their extensive knowledge of both subject areas.

Josh and Chris delivered a fantastic session to our foundership cohort on practical sales and marketing. The session was extremely valuable, and the student founders learned a lot from the experiences of both speakers. The sessions were packed full of content and the team at Mitchell and Stones even continued supporting the students after the session.’
