South East pet owners reveal the number one thing they wish they knew before getting a pet | Petplan survey

According to Statistia’s 2023 research, 57% of UK households own a pet. In light of this, Petplan recently undertook a survey of over 2,000 UK pet owners to understand how prepared they were before getting their pet. 

Top 5 things South East pet owners wish they knew before getting their pet:

  1. Cost/managing care for their pet whilst away- according to 32% of South East pet owners.
  2. Whether getting a pet limits where they can work/live/travel- 25%.
  3. Their lifestyle and how it might change- 24%.
  4. How stressful it may be to get a pet initially- 24%.
  5. How to manage pet care around their daily routine- 20%.

However, a reassuring 30% of South East respondents believe they were well-prepared and had considered all of the above factors carefully.

Top 8 things South East pet owners researched before getting their pet:

  1. Their pet’s dietary needs- according to 61% of South East pet owners.
  2. Cost of having a pet (including vet bills and food etc)- 61%.
  3. Common health issues for their pet- 61%.
  4. How to socialise their pet with people/children- 59%.
  5. Exercise requirements for their pet- 58%.
  6. Cost of pet insurance- 56%.
  7. How to train their pet- 55%.
  8. How to socialise their pet with other animals- 54%.
