HSBC UK recently surveyed over 2,000 UK adults to understand the most popular trips abroad and how savvy Brits are when it comes to their holiday spending.

The survey uncovered some interesting findings, particularly among South East respondents:

  • Popular holidays: South East of England holiday-goers favour city breaks abroad the most- according to 32% of respondents, followed by 31% preferring package holidays abroad.
  • Saving for holidays: It takes South East respondents, on average, nine months to save up for their main holiday abroad.
  • Unexpected fees: 31% have been charged for unexpected holiday fees. From this, 44% were charged for currency conversion, followed by another 41% charged for using their card abroad and 38% charged for unexpected ATM withdrawal fees.
  • Disclosing holiday spending: 55% of South East respondents don’t tell others how much they spent on their holidays. For the 45% who do they are more likely to tell their friends (47%) than their partner (39%).
  • Discussing finances: 38% of South East respondents say this because they don’t like to talk about their finances.
  • Holiday plans: 24% of South East respondents are planning on going to Spain this summer, followed by Italy (16%) and Greece (14%).
